Koenig was a painter engraver, etcher and author. Born Berne 1765, died Berne 1832. Worked first at his fathers workshop, left it 1786. From1798 -1809 he was in Unterseen. 1801 trip to Bernese Oberland. 1809 back to Berne where he started writing. 1820 travelled to Jena where he met Goethe (q.v.), who greatly admired his work and wrote about it. 1821 travelled Paris (where he met Vigée-Lebrun, Vernet and Gerard), stayed for 1 year. Published a series of Swiss folk costumes and was famous for his 'Transparentgemälde' (transparent paintings). Brun gives a list of his prints.
